Periodontal (gum) Care
The medical community has compelling evidence of the relationship between gum inflammation and disease and a host of systemic diseases. Accordingly, Dr. Kei Lam, our Columbia-trained periodontist, and Kathy Ann-Parris, our New York University-trained hygienist, supervise a comprehensive, soft-tissue management program that reflects our concern about the links between periodontal disease and many serious health problems. Our goal: Healthy teeth, gums and bodies that will last a lifetime.
Perio Protect
In the summer of 2010, our practice adopted the use of a new strategy for periodontal
disease, one that opens up bold and unique pathways—non-surgical and non-invasive—for treating a wide range of
periodontal problems. What we have learned is that when oxygen—in the form of a hydrogen peroxide gel
(combined with Vibramycin, a specific antibacterial agent for the gums, when necessary)—is kept in intimate contact
with plaque in periodontal pockets (the juncture where teeth meet gum) it can render the plaque non-toxic.
Perio Protect offers a custom-formed dental tray that is ideal for delivering this oxygenating solution.
We’ve seen impressive results when traditional scaling and root planing are combined with Perio Protect’s Perio Trays®.
Patients report that the trays, custom fabricated for each patient, are comfortable, convenient and easy to use.

Understanding Periodontal Health
When we meet with patients to talk about oral health and periodontal disease,
we often use a poster on periodontal health, a tool promoted by the American Dental Association. You can take a look
at the one-pager here.
In addition, there are useful websites for learning more about this kind of disease. We consistently find that
the American Association of Periodontology and the American Dental Association provide excellent background
on this all-important aspect of dental care.
