Periodontal (gum) Care

Our Columbia-trained periodontist supervises a comprehensive soft-tissue management program. Our motto is “teeth for a lifetime.”

Recently Dr. Lam sent out a letter to dentists expressing her concern about the links between periodontal disease and many serious heath problems. It is excerpted below:

Research within the last decade has shown that Periodontitis is a risk factor for some systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and preterm low-birth weight infants. Patients with severe Periodontitis (estimated between 5-15% of the general population) are twice as likely to have a heart attack and three times as likely to have a stroke compared to patients without periodontal disease after adjusting for risk factors such as blood lipids, cholesterol, body mass, diabetes, and smoking. Mothers with significant periodontal disease had a 7.5 fold increase in the risk of having a preterm, low birth weight baby.

VELscope™ Oral Cancer Screening System

In addition to keeping a careful eye on your eye and your gums, we offer annual oral cancer screening. This includes the use of VELscope™, an FDA-approved technology developed by the British Columbia Cancer Agency and Vancouver-based LED Dental Inc. to help in the early detection of oral cancer. Essentially, the dentist shines a blue light into the patient's mouth that causes the mouth to fluoresce, enabling the dentist to see abnormal tissue; the process takes one or two minutes. Oral cancer is one of the few forms of cancer that has not experienced a significantly decreased mortality rate in the past 30 years, largely because it is typically detected at a late stage. Our practice is one of the leaders in adopting VELscope™, a technology uniquely able to help in early detection. Learn more at www.VELscope™.com.

Bad Breath Care

A scientific method for eliminating oral malodor. No mints, masking mouthwashes or other superficial remedies.

Drill-less Drill

The Whisperjet™ is a new method of removing decay, utilizing alumina-oxide particles delivered to the tooth under high pressure. It is virtually painless.

Unsurpassed Service and Convenience

We have evening and Saturday hours and provide free parking to boot. “Never a wait,” is not simply a desire on our part, it is actually how we operate.

A patient once remarked, “You are the Union Square Café of dental practices.” As a ‘foodie,’ I knew that Union Square was not only the top-rated restaurant in NYC for many years running, but as importantly, it was know for it’s extraordinarily friendly and competent waitstaff. So this indeed was a terrific compliment.
